Their marketing strategy is irresponsible, whichever way it's dressed up. The FCA have taken this view today, too.

Oh the FCA have reacted to it have they?

Wow! I think you are over reacting and need a chill pill.
Its not like she's a recovering alcoholic and got a free sample of Dry Gin is it?

Ha ha, the dry gin bit made me laugh for no apparent reason!

I think your reaction has some merit. Firstly I think sending a £1 coin to someone with money issues is akin to sending a sample of Gin to an alcoholic or a casino chip to someone with a gambling addiction.
You may want to raise it with advertising standards or trading standards.
I think at best it is inappropriate, however, you could try removing the emotion from the situation, it'll help with your blood pressure!

I'm sorry but are you for real? Money is a fundamental requirement to survive in this country. Lending money isn't.

It would be far more dangerous for the old mailings of "You have been pre-approved for a £2k Loan" than sending somebody a pound with absolutely no obligations on it at all.

The fact they sent her pound didn't have her drooling over the phone asking them to send her more money.

It was free. Regardless of whether she has debt problems in the past she still has and needs money. This gimmick has nothing to do with debt apart from the company who sent it.

You liken sending a pound as the same as sending an alcoholic a free sample of alcohol.

The difference is that your wife still uses money (presumably you don't not allow her to ever touch a single coin in case it tempts her to instantly apply for a payday loan) so your anger is somewhat misplaced.

If they were sending her an unsolicated approved loan -and all she had to do was say yes- your anger would be appropriate but over sending a pound coin is somewhat inappropriate and misplaced.

  • I'm surprised that no-one has yet been on asking if they make 500 applications to Amigo, will it affect their credit score!!!
