passport delivery

Hi ,

does anyone know if you are not in when your new passport is delivered, can only the named person collect? Or can an agent collect it for you?

I keep hearing horror stories of how long it takes to get a replacement and think we may be away when it arrives.

Mine got put through the letterbox at 7pm, my daughter didn't answer the door because she didn't know who it was! So they just popped it through.

My Son's new passport was delivered last week. It had my name on it but they gave it to my Husband who signed for it.

I have had 4 passports delivered to our address in the last couple of months and each time I have been in but the passports have just been popped through the letterbox without ringingthe bell/knocking the door....they have not come via royal mail but the old passports have been returned usually the following day as part of normal royal mail.

  • excellent thanks. Am having it delivered to deepest darkest Yorkshire and we will have left by the time it is delivered (reading all the complaints on line about delays). So my relative can hold it for us.

Are you sure it was Royal Mail? They normally use either Royal Mail special delivery (which requires a signature) or a courier that does not require a signature. Supporting documents are returned by normal post. There was a thread on this subject a few months ago...

    Receiving your new passport
Your new passport will be sent to you either by courier or Royal Mail Recorded Delivery. The postman or courier will then do one of the following:
hand your passport to you if you’re at home
deliver your passport with the rest of your post
leave you a card or send you a letter to tell you where to collect your passport or how to arrange redelivery
The ‘missed delivery’ card or letter won’t say that the package contains

I hope that's a mistake and they really mean Special Delivery - recorded delivery is no more reliable than standard post, and they often don't bother to get a signature.

If you want a "signed for" delivery, you can pay an extra £3 otherwise the new passport comes in the ordinary post in an envelope that makes it clear that it contains a passport.

If you ask for your old passport to be sent back to you, it comes in a discrete plain envelope.
