Seen a car I quite like and may buy but the current owner wants to keep its private plate and revert back to its original plate.
Will this hold up my purchase while DVLA gets it all sorted or is it a straightforward process?

Thanks

  • He'll need to put his plate on retention, and a new (probably the original) plate will be re-assigned to the car. This'll involve a new tax disc, V5C and MOT certificate (?). He can do this through the post or visit one of the DVLA offices and get it done there & then while he waits. Once he has the paperwork, he'll need to get the plates made up.

If he's stupid enough to sell it to you with the plate still on it, it's yours to do what you like with. It belongs with the car (not owned by him) unless it's retained.

So chances are ... yes, it'll hold up your purchase.

It's quite a straight forward process, you just need to fill in the form correctly. Complete a V317 (sections 2 & 4) Fill in section 2, but put the new owner (who ever is buying) as the registered keepers details (you need to include the V5 with the new owner section filled in with the new owner details & include the MOT too) The new keeper signs & dates under the section. You then need to complete section 4 with how long you want to retain & then tick box NO & complete the original owners details (i.e. the chap selling the car) as the Grantee. The Grantee is the person who has the right to the registration number & has the right to assign it.

From my experience, it is always best to do this whilst the vehicle is taxed. This means that no insurances will have to be sent. If the vehicle is not taxed, then it's best to tax on the green slip & then send the other side of the V5 with the application (the side with the new keeper details etc) This means that the car can still be driven whilst the paperwork is being processed, it also means that the new keeper can drive their new vehicle (albeit on the personalised plate) until they receive details of the new registration...

    I think that covers it...

I did this last year, it was no hassle at all.

I took the car with private plates still on, previous owner applied to put the plates on retention before the sale. Paperwork for the transfer of plates came through within a fortnight, then it was just a matter of swapping the plates and tax disc, sticking the old plates in the post to the previous owner, and telling my insurance company the reg no had changed.

In order that they could "provide a more streamlined service to our customers":rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I think the less streamlined system was quicker.
