I used to wonder why people paid a premium for dirty carrots, and the same thing goes as with potatoes - they last much longer.

I suppose it's logical. Same reason why you need to take all pre-packed veg out of plastic bags when you get them home. It's the wet atmosphere that makes them go off more quickly.

Also look out for "splits", huge taters , cheap.
Not sellable in supermarkets, but sometimes see them at farmers gate.

Round my way (south wales) sacks of spuds out of the back of a transit. Usually parked in Wickes.

Morrisons are doing 12.5kg bags of unwashed potatoes at time of writing, for £2 a bag, instead of £3.49.

Works out at around 16p a kilo!

I should say, we tried them for our Sunday dinner, and they made delicious roasts :-)
