On mother's day my daughter gave me a lovely potted pale green oregano. I repotted it with a thyme plant in a giant pot. While the thyme has done well, and now has tiny flowers, the oregano looks sad, and the underneath is going dry and brown, I am afraid it's dying. Does anybody have any ideas what I am doing wrong? It is outside in the sunniest part of the garden.

I'd guess it was either caught in a late frost (Mother's Day being 30 March) or the relentless rain this Spring has been too much for it

I'm thinking that if the Thyme is doing well (it likes quite free draining, drier conditions)it might be too dry for the oregano which is the one that's suffering .If you water too much the Thyme might then suffer! Much better to have them in separate pots. You could try planting some of the more lush plants together( parsley, oregano, basil, chives) and some of the ones that like drier conditions (thymes, rosemary, sages in a more grittier free draining soil if you like arrangements of herbs in pots) Although always keep mints separate (as they will take over everything!)
  • Thanks Cally, I will do some rearranging...

Sage with thyme, chives with oregano and see if that helps.

    Such a novice here!

My Oregano is in one of the raised beds which is mostly soil and it seems to do really well, so I would say as Cally says they are happy in wetter soil. It also seems to be pretty indestructable-mine stays out all year around and even survived the -15 degrees a few winters back.

I keep picking and use for both cooking and for health. Oregano is great for digestive health and boosting the immune system plus we feed it to the chickens for the same reasons, they love it.
