Barclaycard phonecall

My partner found a message, supposedly from B/card, left on her phone. It stated that her card could be compromised in the future and asked her to call a number. That number is not on the B/card site.

When spoken to we were careful not to give out personal information. They stated that they were contacting a number of cardholders. I asked what information had led them to think there could be a problem in the future and they said they didn't know as they had not been given the information by their investigators! I asked for the direct dial number to their fraud department and they declined, saying they would put me through as there was no direct dial number to give us.
My partner was told that they wished to block her card and then send her out a new card to replace it. She asked that they simply send out the new card and then she would cut up the old card...they said that couldn't be done as the card would have a different number.

Anyone else had this from B/card recently? Is this genuine or is it a phishing/fraud attempt?

It sounds very strange. Call the number on the back of your BarclayCard and talk to someone in customer services to double check.

Would say it sounds like a scam to me. Check the account on line to see what is on there if you can. If something is there that has nothing to do with you, ring the number on the website for cust services & report the problem. They are very helpful. I had a card get scanned with contactless device about 2 years ago now & they could not have been more helpful.
  • They do have an automated 'Fraud Detection' number, but it does not ask for an account number, password or any other sensitive details. It's automated and you have to press 1 for a 'genuine' transaction or 2 for a disgeniune transaction, if I can remeber rightly.

However, your best bet is to call customer services on the back of the card.
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

Yep... same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago - except that I took the call, rather than calling back following a voicemail.

The lady calling didn't ask me for any sensitive information, but just told me my card was being blocked, and a new one with new number would be sent. (I asked her some questions about recent transactions on my account, and her answers convinced me that she was genuinely from Barclaycard.)

The new card actually arrived in the post the next day. So I guess they had my new card lined-up and ready for dispatch before blocking my old card and phoning me.

    So the inconvenience was minimal.
