Dating agency or dating site, which is best?

OK, so this doesn't really affect me, more a close friend but here goes.
I'm in my 30s, my close friend's 32, been single for a few years, busy with his career etc. but feels he hasn't really had a chance to meet someone due to work, travel etc. He's been in long-term relationships etc. but never married.
Anyhow, he was thinking of two things to try and "restart" his dating life; using a dating/introduction agency or online dating but then he got cold feet over using online dating, and was wondering if a dating agency would work or not? Do they work? was what he asked me.
In financial terms, can't they be expensive?
I need help here, any advice you can offer is welcomed.

No idea about dating agencies, but I met my husband on Match, had to rifle through a fair few 'misses' though, including a guy 45 years older than me whose profile picture was him 'laid' over a Jag's bonnet with a bottle of cava and a rose in his mouth, and another who exclaimed how posh I was to order a G&T in a pub.
My sister went with Plenty of Fish and had streams and streams of weirdos, and I mean men who were probably on day release sort of weirdos.
However, one of my other friends met their partner on PoF and they've been together about five years now.
Hit and miss for them all really.0 -

i've met two lovely guys off POF but the ratio of how many msgs i got and responded to is astonishing so your friend need not get discouraged because women can be awfully picky on line, i am guilty of that!
i would recommend plenty of fish but it needs a lot of patience and self esteem because you will get a lot of people not replying to your messages.
the only dating agency exp i have is off watching millionaire matchmaker :rotfl:Don't sweat the small stuff0 -

This made me laugh!! I have recently tried POF and have concluded that around 90 % of the men on there seem to be after only one thing. I'm kind of sworn off the idea of any of it again after my experiences from POF - So make sure your friend is in exactly the right headspace - prepare for rejection and be resilient, resilient, resilient lol Its a jungle out there0 -
I think online dating would at least be the way to start. If you are prepared to realise that you will get some weirdos contacting you, but even they can help while away an evening!
I tried it after a year of being single, took it all with a pinch of salt and it has worked well. I joined okcupid first, and got in touch with 3 blokes, one who lived in Ireland but I actually had a lunch date with when I was over there. Lovely bloke, just too far away. Another one arranged a date and then cancelled and that did knock me for six. Then tried PoF. Two guys who I met up with for 3 lovely dates, but then I decided they weren't for me, one 'one date only' man, referred to by my friend and I as the lothario in the library due to his keenness! And then a lovely guy who I actually put off to go out with library man. 3 months later we're still going strong! It may not last, but I'd have no hesitation in going online again.0
