No this is not your responsibility, it is the landlord's. You wouldn't pay the council to repair your home. Also this is not an asset which you could sell and take with you when you leave. Also I doubt your landlord will share any profit made on the property with you.

It all depends on what's in the smallprint of the contract that you signed. If there is no written contract and the agreement is just verbal where the two of you had a chat and it was agreed that you would pay X for rent on a certain date and all bills then i would say nothing. If your friend/landlord aproaches you asking for money for repairs you should flatly refuse saying it was never in the agreement.Hopefully you pay rent/bills by bank transfer or cheque, this would be proof that your a tenant and have certain legal rights.Never feel threatened or intimidated by them and if they persist just say your going to seek legal advice.
Hopefully none of this will be necessary,if you don't already,i would start paying through the bank.Friendships and money,in my opinion, are best kept well apart, goodluck.

I would NOT contribute friend or not.

I am sure that is the responsibility of the Landlord. Double check your tenancy agreement. (I hope you have one!)

In a word No. My husband and I own two flats which we rent out and we would not expect our tenants to pay for the likes of plumbing, electrical repairs. That's our responsibility as landlords and owners of the property.
    .
Even if renting from a friend it's always a good idea to have a lease which spells out exactly who is responsible for what - saves trouble and avoids any misunderstanding.
