hop3y - I've used Wordpress many times but only for blog-style sites. This time I'm looking to create a pretty standard 5-ish page information site. Is Wordpress good for that too?

Yes - I've got a few sites I've made with WordPress, DM me and I'll send you some links!

Could you not use Dreaweaver within CS6 on the 30 day free trial basis-the trial version s described as 'fully functional'?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Wordpress is blogging software, you'll either spend a long time removing the blogging features or clog up the web with even more "social" buttons and comment posting features.

I think it's better if people don't accept compromises when it comes to their freedom.

Using a free trial means that you're accepting limitations imposed upon you by a corporation, it means that you're installing code onto your system that you can't view or alter, there could be all sorts of back doors in there.

These companies also like to try and enforce their rules and regulations, why even risk it? Why use something by a company that might try to take legal action against you?

The other big problem with this type of approach is proprietary file formats. I'm not sure if Dreamweaver is as bad since HTML is markup stored in plain text but if this approach were taken with Photoshop, the user would potentially have .PSD files that they can't open with anything but Photoshop, had they used free software, they could open it in a number of programs. They probably have some kind of Dreamweaver project file though.

A free trial is also essentially an advert for a product, why would you freely subject yourself to advertising?

"Free" as in "free stuff"...gratis is NOT "free as in freedom".

Nvu died the death, and was succeeded by KompoZer, whose development version hasn't been updated for 4½ years!

The suggested free web-authoring product is called BlueGriffon, where the latest version is just a year old.

It's a gap to be filled, there's nothing comparable at the moment, not in terms of scope at least. However most WYSIWYG editors write really !!!!!! HTML, so if you can already hand-roll HTML you may find the output impenetrable.
