Car registered cat D but has never been a write off

I've had my car since new (2006) in 2011 my keys got stolen so I claimed through insurance and they fitted new locks. I have tried selling it and done a hpi check and it is coming up as a cat d write off in 2011. I contacted insurance company who admitted that it shouldn't have been registered as a cat d as it was never written off just simply repaired. I am still waiting for them to get back to me however I want to know if it is possible for them to remove the category d status from my car ?

If they don't then you should seek damages off them for the difference in value between a cat D and a non write off.

As insurers can apply the mark they can remove it, but theres allot more red tape involved in doing so.

If they cant get the mark reversed then ask them to provide a letter to you to the effect they recorded the CAT-D as an error, that the vehicle hasn't been written off but repaired in a claim for lost stolen keys and no body or frame damage had occurred during the course of that claim.
this letter should negate the loss in value, but if you do discover that no one will accept that letter and value it as a CAT-D then you should seek the losses from the insurer.

Keep focused, don't give them an alternative solution, they've screwed up and it could cost you.
Give them a request in writing to have the categorisation removed within 14 days or you will take them to court.
    Don't call, don't text, don't email - write.
