Ideas for raised brick planters

Hi - looking for ideas from people more creative than me....
We have a large area at the rear of our house (north facing) which is paved and has a retaining wall (lawned area behind the wall if that makes sense) Some years ago we had raised planters built at various points along the wall, partly to break up the huge expanse of paving and wall and partly to strengthen the wall. In some of the planters I have things like a Japanese maple and hydrangea, miniature azalea etc.
I have 2 planters which have largely been planted in bedding plants each year however I would like something more permanent in them and am looking for ideas. I do want colour along with foliage and although the area is at the north of the property it's quite sheltered being below the level of the garden.
One planter is 38 inches tall and 44x36.
The other is a split level planter - each side is 43x26. One side is 18 inch high and the other 27 high.
Any ideas for planting schemes welcome.
Thanks
If I get time tomorrow I will try to take photos - that may help!
