Unless, of course, you prefer below-ambient air temperature in your car; and/or you like reduced drag and concomitant fuel savings at higher speeds

Well then the OP would need to get it fixed. The thread was 'Air con not working, Any advice' not 'How do I fix my Air Con' so my reply is a valid one. Surprised I haven't been thanked yet!

Like you, my air con is on ALL the time.

    Makes sense to me
I think its generally accepted that your AC reduces your MPG by between 5-10% so why would you leave it on ALL of the time.

Makes very little difference to my Saab and it didn't make a jot of difference to my Audi either. I calculate my fuel usage through Fuelly.com. Autotrader did a test with an Astra at M.I.R.A and found that at speeds above 40mph it made no difference to performance.

I think more recent systems are are lot more efficient. I would rather be more comfortable on a journey for the sake of a few pennies.

    I don't accept that it's as high as 5 to 10%.

In my case it's Climate Control set on auto and the AC snowflake button which is on all the time - I just set the temperature I want and the system supplies filtered dry air which has been either heated or cooled to achieve the required temperature in the car.

It's the temperature in the car interior which I set - not the temperature which comes out of the vents/ducts.

Without the snowflake button the air would not be cooled if I asked for an interior temperature lower than the outside temperature.

Likewise on a cool and/or damp day I would only get outside air which would mean misty windows.

Why have a fully automatic Climate Control and not use it?

Anyway opening a window uses more fuel than the AC does at anything much above 30mph, but I don't open the windows even in towns as I don't want dirty exhaust laden town/city air.

So CC and AC on all the time for me.
