Credit Record Not Correct!!!

Options
Hi all
This is my first post. I did a credit report with the 3 recommended on this site. 2 came out good, but the 3rd site (Equifax)is showing a bad history for a different person at an address I've never stepped foot in. The only matching thing in the section is our first initial and surname. It's for BT bills that have not been paid since June 2009.
My partner and I are looking to buy a house later this year, but with this showing on my report, will this now make me unable to get a mortgage? After checking my partners hers came out Good, but will this make hers bad now we've just setup a joint current account?
I'm really anxious now that our chances of being accepted for a mortgage is really slim due to this issue.
Help Me Please!!M

Yes as you have a joint account your now financially linked, this from Equifax might help.
  • So our chances of a mortgage are screwed now? I've appealed the report stating that they've got it wrong, but it takes 28 days to get an answer. I'm praying the banks use 1 of the other 2 sites to do a credit report as they came out good

Ideally I would hold off any applications until the equifax issue is investigated and resolved.

If you really cannot then I would add a notice of correction to your equifax file to state that credit accounts belonging to a different person have erroneously been added to your credit report and are currently being investigated.

In any contact with equifax or the creditor I would point out that you need this correcting asap as this error could affect a mortgage decision (it is possible for an entry to be corrected quicker than 28days).
A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give
or "It costs nowt to be nice"
  • Ok thanks for that. I've contacted Equifax and they said it'll take upto 28 days for a decision, so just gotta keep my fingers crossed now.

Good news (I think). Equifax have removed that persons debt and linked address from my credit report. Only thing is my score hasn't changed, so I would like to know how long does it take for the score to change and no longer say "Poor"?
Everything is green on the report so nothing bad on it at all now.
    Thanks

Don't worry about your Experian 'score', as it is meaningless marketing gubbins made up to keep you subscribed and checking your file. Any lender will judge you under a combination of your application and their own criteria, which obviously will involve checking your credit history. If you're worried about being rejected for a mortgage, then go through a decent broker (ideally not one attached to the estate agency selling the property) who will know which lender to place the application with for the greatest chance of success.
