This debt is from December 2006, it has come as a surprise. Will they arrange a standing order.
Although I understand it should be paid back it surprises me that they have contacted me now

Have they asked you to repay it in full?
My OH was told he needs to repay part of his grant from last year but they asked for the full amount (£1000+) by a certain date. He sent a letter explaining what he could afford to pay each month and they wrote back agreeing and gave standing order details for us to set up a standing order with.0 -
A grant isn't repayable, so this is certainly odd. Are you sure its legit?
I would check by calling up Student loans (find it online don't trust the people that called you/sent the letter).
A student loan is repayable - if you've escaped from repaying since 2006 is it maybe because your income has been too low until now?0 -
Is the debt from December 2006 because you left the course that the grant related to before finishing it? If so you'd need to look at the terms of the grant, but to my mind they would be right to want some or all of the money back as they could have given it to someone who would have made full use of it.
One other thing I would be looking into is whether the debt is now time barred - normally debts can only be enforced within 6 years, although that may not be the case for this type of debt, and you would still owe the money, they'd just be limited in what action they could take.0 -

Absolutely. Student loans can become statute barred and this avenue is definitely worth pursuing. It's important not to pay ANY money towards this debt (not 1p) or acknowledge that you owe it in writing if you want to pursue this route.
You might want to seek some more advice from the debt free wannabe board on how to pursue this if you want to.
How did you come to owe grant money back? Can you remember?Sealed Pot Challenge #239
