Lloyds PPI - cheque received but no letter?

Hello all,
Just wondering if this was usual practice for Lloyds - my husband made 2 complaints referring to missold ppi on old credit card and loan accounts. The 2 complaints have been dealt with separately, he had one phone call regarding the credit cards, and lots of calls regarding the loans, (several loans which were 'rolled over'). He was told a couple of weeks ago that they'd be in touch shortly.
So, this morning he receives a cheque for just over £800, the accompanying paragraph says, 'as detailed in our letter of 2 June', which we haven't received.
Obviously we're thrilled with the money, but we don't know what it's for?! Aren't they supposed to write to you with an offer, wait for you to accept it, and then send the cheque? Also, and yes, I know this sounds grabby, but if it's for the loans then it is much, much lower than we expected.
I have told DH not to bank it until the letter arrives - can we reject it if we feel we're being fobbed off?
Thanks in advance :)

Yes, you can reject it it, but I would ring and ask what claim it is for. I would expect it would have a reference on it, PPIxxxxxxx where xxxxxxx is a series of numbers.

Stuff does get lost in the post you know, happens all the time. Lloyds have no control over that. :D

Whilst you are on the line, ask to be paid by BACS and give your BACS details, This will need to be done by your husband or he will have to give verbal authority for you to handle the refund. That way any other cheques will not have the chance of going astray.

And you will not have been 'fobbed off'.

Hello, thanks for your reply. We have indeed managed to locate a reference number, and it appears to relate to the credit cards. So we are still waiting on a decision for the loans. We are pleased, as we had been led to believe that Lloyds often don't pay out on cards. Fingers crossed for the loans now!:T

I think the experts here will tell you, the PPI was shown on every statement if it was applied. So for someone to say they never knew they had it when it might show every month(it was only applied if you had a debit balance on your card), is a poor argument.

I have heard of cases where where someone making a claim states they never knew they had it, and yet had made a successful claim on it, sometimes more than the PI refund would be worth.

Thanks again for your reply. Not sure where you got the idea that he claimed because he didn't know he had it - my original post mentions nothing of his reasons for claiming. His claim was for other mis-selling reasons. No doubt when their elusive letter turns up we will be further enlightened as to how they arrived at their decision. We are very pleased nonetheless.

Actually, they will not reveal why your complaint was upheld at all.

I wasn't inferring that was one of his reasons for complaining, just the fact that reason appears to be a fairly common one and as people here have pointed out in the past it is evident on the card statements if you have paid it or not.

I actually got caught out myself with Egg and I would never have willingly taken it. I missed the one charge that appeared in a statement. :D

If the FRL does not turn up in a day or so, just call them and ask for a copy to be sent out again.

Sorry - misinterpreted your reply, thought you were saying he was making a spurious claim! My mistake :-)
The letter has come, no reason given, but a full breakdown of the amount. Still very pleased, not least because the car had to have a new cam belt last week - £340!!! Ouch!
