HMRC say we are behind, but we pay by DD?

In 2004 we were overpaid working families tax credit. For the last two years we have been paying back £49.12 a month by direct debit. This morning out of the blue we received a letter saying we are £29.55 behind and we must pay this immediately or our agreement will be cancelled.

I have checked our bank and our DD has been coming out of the bank as normal, so how can we be behind and by an amount that bears no resemblance to what we pay each month?

Has anyone had anything like this? Obviously I will phone them on Monday, but it's going to be bugging me all weekend!

Tax credits are open today if you want to put your mind at rest.

In regards to overpayments you can only speak to the number on your letter as it is a separate office that deals with them.
  • Come back from work today found a letter from HM Revenue overpayment letter - stating we owe £145.79 and if we do not pay our contract will be cancelled etc - the amount is different to what I pay each month anyway - we are paying back a working family tax credit we had which was worked out wrong which we told them but anyway we are paying it back now and I haven't missed a payment since it started and it ends may2015 - I have just checked my bank statements no missed payments either - so why this letter can anyone help - don't like these type of letters - I will call Monday too to ask why
