Looking for suggestions for a replacement for our diesel Avensis estate. Now last child finished uni we dont really need an estate. The avensis has been the best car we have had to date, especially on long journeys 'down south' to see family. We average about 8 trips to Brighton a year. Don' t think I've ever felt uncomfortable in it.

We want used not new, and preferably something cheaper to tax. Any recommendations ? Thanks.

  • Why come away from the company who made this superb car.

The obvious answer is a newer Avensis, if Diesel is warranted by your normal use the 2.0 Diesel should be cheaper VED, but common thinking is the 1.8 petrol is the pick of the bunch.

If you want smaller, maybe an Auris...but don't whatever you do buy MMT gearbox, its junk, even Toyota can't make an automated manual work reliably and you'll note its vanishing quickly from their current model line up.

If it's a "superb car", why are they driven (universally) by some of the worst drivers on the road?!

Because they are learning to be bad enough to drive an Audi.

:rotfl: don't have problems with Audis. At least they tend to be able to drive at reasonable speeds.

I wondered whether Micra drivers move onto Avenses or if its the other way round.

God what does that make me then?

I am driving an Avensis estate at the moment and hate it with a passion, like driving a blancmange when in wind and am now going for an Audi A3 sportback !

I am doing a good 2+ hour run later and am dreading it in this weather, I have to end up stopping every now and again, as it feels like I have had a blow out and the car is skidding. Been to the garage and they say nothing wrong with it.
