Need new passports - existing ones expired

Situatin is my husband & I were married 10 years back in April, so are hoping to go to Belgium for a few days in August. Problem is both our passports have expired. On the forms for new ones can we put in the numbers of the expired passports or do we need to provide birth certificates & details of parents & grandparents? Problem that having to provide birth certificates is that my husband's is somewhere in a box somewhere in the house or shed, mine is in my Record of Achievement which won't be a problem if it's in the box I think it's in, if not then I have same problem as my husband.

Also there's visa from a holiday to Turkey 3 years ago in our passports, it was a big family holiday so we'd like the passports abck if possible. Do the Passport agncy still return expired passports if you want them back even if visas have expired?

If you have had a passport previously getting a new one is easier, but you need to carefully read the advice note with the passport form as it gives you all the info you need.

You should get your old one back.

unless things have changed recently, you get your old expired passports back (in separate post to the new ones) when you renew them.

I'm renewing my adult passport at the Passport office in person next week (don't have time to wait now for the postal service), I was not asked if my passport had expired, only did i have it in my posession, is it still in good condition/not damaged, and they checked I have no name changes for the new passport to be issued.

There is no difference in the process if your passports expired today or 10 years ago its still a renewal and follows that method.

I certainly got my expired one back last year when I renewed

I think you have to tick a box to say that you want your old passport returned - it comes back with the corner cut off it.

Belgium is the most pointless country in Europe. You would have more fun staying in with a few beers and Netflix.

It's a bit harsh, Bruges is very nice, and I enjoyed my trip to Spa to watch the motorcycle Grand Prix in 1976.

But if the OP does take the beer/Netflix option at least they could enhance the experience by getting in a selection of Belgian beer

Sunday morning market in Leige is the only reason to visit Belgium.

It's not that bad. Ok, it's not the most exciting place in the world but I'd prefer a weekend there to somewhere like Dublin.

It has beer, chips with mayo, chocolate and Hema.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Just looked at online renewal and can't see box to tick for getting old passports back. I can get to the post office tomorrow if it's on the forms from there. That's unless the passports get sent back anyway or do I put the request in where the box is for further information?

They always send them back, you don't need to ask.
