DMP & Mutual Support Thread - Part 10

Some really inspirational and positive posts on here. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside
I fired off the letter TTFM kindly helped me with to the CEO of the only predator left not playing ball. Got a response within an hour "wanting to talk the situation through". I don't think so, "put it in writing in case we have to go down the FOS route" was my response.
I'm secretly enjoying the empowerment.
The last few weeks have been difficult health wise (found two tumours on my liver) likely to be benign but I get the final results tomorrow. Fingers crossed xLBM 2 June 20140 -
Hi,
I've entered into a DMP with StepChange and they tell me I have to find out from my individual creditors (of which there are 10) if they have frozen interest/charges?
I thought they did all that..The truth is out there... and I want to believe0 -

I thought that, but its not the case imo. You are still responsible for your debt and affairs what goes on. Only Stepchange is there to justify to your creditors that you are in hardship hence the yearly reviews etc.
It varies from creditor to creditor. some froze, some reduced the original interest rate. Its all down to circumstances.
Sometimes it takes a while for creditors to realise that they should freeze the rates. At your cost. I got defaulted for every creditor that cancelled the rates and it gets passed on to an external DCA.0 -

Hi Silentkiller..hope your not...! and well done on entering the land of dmp....
I'm not sure from your post whether you have just set your dmp up or have been in one for a while? If it has only recently been set up then you will find that charges and interest is likely to have been at the beginning but usually this settles down in the first few months. You can check whether interest is still being charged as you go along through your statements or by phoning and asking! If you do find that some creditors are still charging interest TTFTM has posted recently a lovely template letter you can send to your creditor.
At the end of the day we are responsible for our own debts and for keeping the balances updated on our SC online account.
Do have a read back of this thread and the previous one for lots of information and pop back with questions and updates..

Hi and welcome silentkiller :hello:
Stepchange doesn't do this for you, when they originally set up your DMP they will ask creditors to stop interest but then it's up to you to keep on top of whether interest is being charged and, if so, to fight it.
My advice to anyone setting up a DMP is to always remember that debt is yours, Stepchange may distribute the money for you but you need to keep control of what is going on. I advise keeping all paperwork related to your debt, all statements, letters etc and possibly setting up a spreadsheet to record exactly what is going on.
It may be useful for you to read back through this thread and the previous ones to get some feeling for what a DMP is about and how we can help and support you through any problems you may encounter.

Okay, that s a really useful post so thank you(was worried I'd get ridiculed for being naive). I have spoken to one of my biggest creditor about token payment of £1 and he was more than happy about it (which has now made me a little more positive).
Thanks for the spreadsheet suggestion, I will do that when it all gets goingThe truth is out there... and I want to believe0 -

You definitely won't ever get ridiculed here because we are all in the same boat, or have been in the past.
