I've just read that basic bank accounts don't allow standing orders. This could make life a little uncomfortable as my monthly service charge on my flat is paid by standing order and I don't know how they would react if I tured around and said I couldn't pay that way anymore (dont want a massive annual bill for example) and I use them for other thing as well occasionally. Do basic accounts do bank transfers? I've just opened an account with nationwide if that helps.
A basic account, normally has all the benefits of a standard current account, but with no over draught facility.
I had one with Natwest, and I could do everything I could do with a current account.
Major difference is the type of bank card you receive, some do just cash cards, others give you a debt card, you should be fine.

Cool. Thank you. Nationwide do a debit card which I'm rather happy about as I almost never carry cash (or indeed spend any money these days). And I haven't used an overdraft since my student days (a long time ago) so hardly going to miss that ...0

Re. Problems with Nationwide.
I have the same sort code as you Ploppy for a cash card account and all DDs transferred without a hitch. I got paid into the account last friday and so far DDs for water rates, gas/electricity, BT, mobile phone, TV licence, car insurance have all been processed just fine. I also have 1 standing order which was processed on monday...again no problems. I have paid for a train ticket online, withdrawn cash from different machines, used chip and pin in shops, transferred money into my sister's bank account using faster payment (no card reader needed, they just ask for memorable data to verify!) and made one off token payments to creditors (where I can no longer access my account online) using their account numbers/sort code.
Guessing I've been lucky, but it seems that I can use my basic account and card in just the same way as my old current account, without the hassle of a card reader! The only difference is no overdraft facility and no cheque book. I've also phoned them twice and they've been really helpful.
Right, off to try and get some sleep again now! Hope it all gets sorted out for those of you having problems.LBM: 18th January 2015:idea:

I'm getting myself in a right pickle here and wondered if anyone could help me.
I've got credit card debts with Halifax, Nationwide, Barclaycard, Creation, MBNA and M&S. My OD is with Santander. I thought I'd been clever and moved all my DDs to my Lloyds current account. However, I now know that Halifax are part of the Lloyds banking group.
1.) Do you think this will be a problem?
2.) If so, does anyone know of a basic bank account that I could open which would not be touched by any of my creditors?
3.) Could I keep the Lloyds account for payment of my household/priority bills and open a separate one for my cc bills?
Thanks for all your help! i'm in a right hole at the moment and this forum is really helping me get through thingsLightbulb Moment: 18/01/2015 :jCurrent Debt: 31,869.62 :eek:DMP Start Date: 01/09/2015DFD: TBC but sooner rather than later, I hope! :beer:0 -

Well as they are connected it would probably be advisable not to use that account. You won't need a separate bank account for cc's if you are doing your dmp through stepchange as it will be a monthly dd paid to them. Natwest do basic accounts I don't think you have debts with them or rbs who they are connected with or the co-op is another one.

Well after feeling really positive yesterday had a letter back from SC to say Hfx has rejected Dmp for both mine and hubby ccs. Can someone who has experienced this advise me what we should expect next from hfx. We have not missed payments with them yet as our account was with them so kept them up to date until our new bank account was set up. Next hfx cc payment due on 11/3, was going to secure message them and offer token payment, should I still do this and what do I do about interest. Panicking again now[STRIKE][/STRIKE]LBM January 2015:(

Depends if SC are still going to make payment but after a couple of SC or token payments they are likely to accept. You'll have to let the debt go up a little. It's normal. My Wife and I had about £35k debt end of November, and after tokens and prior to first SC payment in March it's £36k easy  Comes down and waves goodbye to the original debt amount on it's way down and down eventually though. Take about 3 to 6 months, maybe a few more just to get debt back to what it was when you stopped paying up and started doing token payment, but that's when it's settled down and you just bang cruise control on for the most part, or so I read on here
I think getting defaults and rid of AP markers etc will be the bigger test, but for all it's daunting and uncertain have you seen how happy in general literally 100% of established DMP'ers are on this thread, most of the time. Thank you. Yes SC are still going to make payments to them so hopefully they will accept or sell. I did expect our debt to go up before it comes down and didn't expect all the creditors to be as good as MBNA nevertheless it is scary:eek:
That's very true about the established dmpers seemingly to be happy and I have read on more than one occasion that starting the dmp is the best thing they ever did. Need to keep reminding myself this!![STRIKE][/STRIKE]LBM January 2015:(

I'm happy:D
Halifax didn't refuse my offer but did sell me (should I be offended:D) very quickly to apex who were very nice when I spoke to them. Nice early default and frozen interest. Fingers crossed for you.

I had a lot of trouble at the start with BC not recognising my SC payment, even though they were getting the payment.
Can you check your online SC statement, make sure the account details are correct, take a screen shot and then ring BC and ask them where to send the evidence too?
And please don't worry it'll get sorted out, it's just a DMP hiccup, and we all get them, especially at the start.
Do the same check with the Helifax payments and then call them next week if the payment hasn't shown up.
And good luck with it, you are doing great.
Thank youI have decided not to worry about it this weekend, try to have a good weekend + then tackle it next week!
