Working for a bank with Defaults on file?

Hello
My friend has applied for a job with HSBC, I've been helping her fill in the online form. The first 3 questions are eligibility based and ask
1. Do you have any adverse credit? She replied Yes
2. Are you eligible to work in the UK? Yes
3. Are you prepared to undergo a CRB check? Yes
She as then taken to proceed through the whole application.
So we are wondering, is having adverse credit a problem as she passed the eligibility section???
She has 2 defaults from 3 years ago. One she only found out about when checking credit file tonight, it's an old phone bill she didn't even realise she owed and the other is with Natwest, who she was in dispute with over some bank charges. All other credit on her file is up to date, no CCJ's, nothing else untoward. But as the defaults are unsatisfied, would this be an issue?
She is happy to pay the phone bill off as this was an oversight on her part but does not want to pay the bank one as she believes she does not owe the money hence the default.
The response is not automated as we know of someone else who ticked no to the CRB check and they got a response on the next page saying they would not progress any further as they had not passed the eligibility criteria. They did not even get to complete the application.
Thanks in advance!
