Car dealer has quoted me for GAP insurance. Can you buy this elsewhere or do I have to have it from the dealer? Is there generally much difference in cost?
Thanks

Do an online search, I bought a brand new car last year the dealer quoted nearly £450 for four years cover excluding any dealer fitted accessories, I bought online for half that for five years accessories included, just do your homework to make sure you get the correct type of cover you want for your circumstances.0

Thanks cajef
dealer is quoting £449 plus £449 for minor damage insurance for 3 years. There was no mention of whether the 'extras' were covered or not. I will contact my insurance co + have a look at other co's.0 -
Some insurance companies offer new replacement if the car is written off during the first twelve months check your policy, most specialist GAP companies will defer the cover to start after the twelve months.plus £449 for minor damage insurance for 3 years.
Surely that is what you are already paying your car insurance policy for, the GAP covers the difference between the insurance companies pay out in case of a write off and the cost of a similar new replacement car.0 -
The minor damage ins is for scratches and small dents eg in supermarket car parks which would mean you losing so much no claims plus the excess. I really have to think about that one at that price!! It is completely separate from the GAP0

To cover you against scratches and dents £449 is outrageous, unless you're the world's worst parker. Just put the money in the bank and you'll have more than enough to pay ChipsAway to fix them for you. Or spend it on protecting your NCB and reducing the excess on your insurance to something reasonable - and you'll probably have enough left over to pay the scratch and dent man if you still don't want to involve your insurers.0

I'm extremely careful but it's the other bu**ers in car parks
but yes you are quite right. I will look out my insurance book and see what their general cover is or what else I can do. These salesmen try to push everything on you and make you feel a peasant if you don't have it. But hey it's my cash...not his! lol
