Long curtains?

I have floor to ceiling windows which I love, but the longest "standard" drop size for ready-made curtains seems to be 228/229cm, which leaves me about 6-8 inches short.

I asked in a random shop and she said I'd need to get some custom-made (or buy special very long ones and pay to have them shortened, but there wouldn't be many to choose from) and guesstimated £120 upwards. In comparison, the slightly-too-short ones - although also the entry-level in terms of price/quality - were £17.99 from Argos. That seems like a massive premium.

Any ideas, or suggestions for places I could try? I have no ability to sew, so please don't suggest that!

Potentially try Ebay to see if anyone is getting rid of some nice longs ones?

Thanks! Watch out for my next thread in a few days' time: "Help! My curtains are too long - how do I shorten them?"

I would get blinds, but I really don't think anyone does those that long (apart from those vertical ones that I don't like). With an 8'+ drop, when the blind was up the roll at the top would look like you had a dead body hidden in it.

My SIL has windows which have got to be 2.5m tall plus wall below and had to get curtains made as the long Ikea ones were too short! They ordered from a website and got them for a very reasonable price, so try having a look online if you don't like the Ikea ones.

If you buy long ones and aren't up to shortening them yourself, try asking in somewhere like a dry cleaners or a sewing shop - they often have contacts with people who can alter stuff.

A comparitively simple way of lengthening curtains is to add a strip of material to the bottom of the curtains

Use a colour to match the dominant pattern colour or a complete contrast

My daughter has l-o-n-g windows - I added a darkish green strip to a beige background flower print - looks as if designed that way especially as I made tie backs in the same green

Her other curtains were a plain pale blue - now with a deep blue strip on the bottom and again matching tie backs

Any alterations person would be able to do this easily and cheaply - or ask the MIL

Similar idea can be used to add side strips to widen curtains - so often the standard width is to narrow to cover the window nicely when closed

She is very pleased with them - just waiting for the next request!! LOL

I've bought 108" ones from ebay - they were about £40, just drape slightly on the floor, but I fear they'll shrink a bit when I wash them at some point.

Definitely try ebay - I got two pairs of full-length, lined Sanderson curtains for £50, which included p&p. They are in fantastic condition and they were an absolute bargain.
