Plastering cost

Hello
Would appreciate any thoughts on a quote we've had to remove old plaster down stairs to outside (in sturdy bags to take to tip ourselves), board & skim room.
Room size is 3.5 x 3.8m wide, 2.4 high with one window 1.7 x 1.4h and a chimney breast.
Materials - £503 (inc 18 boards - 2 are thermal at £30 each)
Labour - £912 (3.5 - 4 days for plasterer & labourer)
Travel - £60
Total £1475
Labour includes £85 for stripping old plaster from walls & taking it outside which we might do ourselves. Ceiling is to be overboarded.
Would really appreciate any help.

Seems high. Where are you?
Last week, for 72 m2 materials (25 boards) we paid £270 inc VAT for 12.5mm boards, adhesive, skrim tape and board finish plaster. Yours is 30 m2 walls plus 13 m2 ceiling total 43 m2.
However they may be double boarding the ceiling and/or using firecheck board? Still, that wouldn't bring it near £503 materials. (edit just re-read they are overboarding, so doubt that either of these applies).
We paid £480 labour. This was 4 days work. Total cost £750 for a much larger area than yours (and our walls are 3.3m high so a pain to plaster).
We removed the old plaster ourselves... it really isn't difficult and will take 2 people 1 day including taking it to the tip and clearing up.
You should get more quotes. It seems very high in terms of labour and materials.0 -
Much appreciated - we are in the Midlands so didn't think cost wise it would be a really high area.
Think we are getting plaster off this weekend - just hoping I can persuade OH to leave the ceiling on as I don't think I can cope with the mess (lath & plaster). He does tend to get carried away tho!!
Was yours for ceiling as well or was it all walls please? OH thinks that will make a difference but shouldn't be quite as much!0 -
We pulled down our lath and plaster ceilings too. It does make a TERRIBLE mess but the end result it worth it IMO. It also allowed us to replace the lighting wiring and put insulation in (we are in a ground floor flat).
The price just seems high. Normally plasterers work off a day rate, which around here would be about £130 for the plasterer and £80 for the labourer so your quote is in the ballpark there... I would just question whether a labourer is really needed. The boarding would be 1 day. Then it is normally 2 mixes of plaster per day - so for your room assuming 2 skims that would be a maximum of 2 days for the skimming.
I guess if they want to use a labourer then the labour quote is about right, but I don't really understand where there is £500 of materials. Even after you allow £60 for the two insulated boards, then £100 for adhesive and plaster, that still leaves £340 for 16 boards which is nearly £22 per board - they cost £5 each in B&Q.
I'd always get 3 quotes. Always.0 -
Sorry don't have all details with me but,
Roughly the same size as your room ish, ceiling to be boarded and skimmed too,
And the belter of a curved wall too.
Although we have taken all the old plaster off, and the chimney breast has been bricked up.
£600 the lot.
Which with a curved wall I think is a fab price.
Oop north, above manchester
Hth63 mortgage payments to go.

Seems a bit on the steep side to me. I've just had the hall, stairs and landing and the spare room done for £1,450. They over boarded the ceilings, skimmed the walls and put up cornicing. It took three guys two full days and then two guys another day to finish it all off. They were not the cheapest quote I'd had but were experienced at working with older houses. I'm in a conservation area in the South East for comparison.
