Best simple tablet for 70 year old!

Bouicca21 - that is good to know. An I pad would be the perfect solution if only it was a little cheaper! Some have suggested a refurbished one but as it is a gift I really would like to give something brand spanking new.0

Thank you JasX for your suggestion but I thin k a 7" may just be a tad too small. Ideally I was thinking of a 10" but would compromise on an 8".
Depends on the end user I guess -> my 67 year old father has the 7" he uses with no problems and now my mum is after one for herself (70 years old) she is insisting on one the same size as she wants it to fit easily into her hand bag.0 -
Firstly, why the exclamation mark after your dad's age - age means nothing. Experience and aptitude are far more important.
You are a case in point as you admit to not knowing anything beyond windows - and you're younger.
It just gets my goat when people make ageist assumptions.
Anyway - back to the question of which tablet.
Could you stretch to an iPad mini? Is there anyone else who could chip in?
They are £249 with a 3 year warranty in John Lewis - and your dad could go and get lessons and set-up help in any Apple store, at any time. Apple really does have a brilliant after-sales service which is ideal for those who might need help with transferring files etc.0 -
I think they would prefer something bigger. I suspect the tablet will be used by Dad mainly for reading newspapers online whilst abroad and by Mum for looking at photos, skype and e mailing. Parents have no health or eyesight issues and are a 'young' 70. I doubt Mum would carry it around in her handbag - more likely to be used whilst in the hotel (they holiday quite a lot and usually stay in hotels with WIFI).0

Transformers. My comments were not intended to offend anyone of advanced years. If my exclamation mark has personally offended you then I apologise.
I acknowledge there are many people much older than me who have far more knowledge than I have, as proven by the helpful advice I have been given so far by so many. However, my Father does not have much knowledge. I have not made ageist assumptions at all - I have merely commented on my own father whom I know extremely well.
An I pad mini may be worth considering - there is no one else to chip in but it may be worth the stretch.0 -
See HERE for syncing your tablet with iTunes.Hi again
After more research and trawling around PC world etc. getting more and more confused by all the options available I am now leaning towards a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 with an 8" screen. I am thinking of this one mainly because it falls in budget, I believe Samsung is a good brand, it looks sturdy enough and has an micro SD expansion slot so no problems storing lots of music and photos. I'll compromise on the screen size (initially thought of a 10"). My only concern is how to transfer music currently stored in I tunes (not necessarily bought from I tunes - just stored there). I know there are programmes out there for this purpose but how easy are they to use? I am a novice and to be honest, none of what I have read makes much sense. Also, how are photos transferred from PC to this device - would I just plug the tablet into my laptop and drag and drop via media player?
I think earlier poster Shrimper1 has the same tablet and any further advice on ease of operation would be very welcome. I would love to know if the sound quality is OK for listening to music via the speakers (not through earphones) and ease of connecting to TV via HDMI cable. Also, I presume I could download the Skype app to this tablet? Although this is to be a present for my parents, I want to give it to them set up and loaded with everything they need to get them going. Not easy as someone who has never owned a tablet or smartphone and is a basic windows user!!! Please be gentle.......:)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I'm only a few months away from that tender age myself. Many 70 year olds don't want to be thought of as needing special consideration but age can make a difference sometimes. For me it's that the eyes aren't 20/20 anymore. I find my wife's 10" iPad 3 good when I don't want to fire up Windows or Linux on the Desktop. Easy to use but I still have to reach for right the glasses.
