My address and gas box dont exist....
The building I am living in was created into 4 flats in 2004. They were lying empty for a long time and only in the last few years have had people living in them. Mine is the last flat to be occupied, I moved in a few months ago.
I quickly located my gas box took the serial number, reading and phoned up transco to get a metre point reference number and find out who my supplier is (British Gas).
So now I have been on the phone to british gas a few times trying to set up an account, my serial number is registered at a different address (30 buildings down the street) 3 out of the 4 addresses dont exist (including mine) and the meter point reference number I have been given is for the one flat who is registered!!
British Gas are doing nothing to help sort the situation, I even asked them to send out a man to come look at the boxes and they wont.
So it looks as if two of my neighbours have never paid gas and while that idea is tempting I dont want to be landed with a huge bill in 3 years time. Also my serial number is registered at a different address so does that mean someone else is paying my gas bill??
I feel like banging my head against a wall - need some help/advice please

Phone Xsoserve who, ( 0870 608 1524 ), are supposed to keep an up-to-date national register of Gas Meters and who supplies each one
Also Email B Gas and insist that they confirm in writing that they are not your supplier, if they won't write, write to them confirming the answer they gave you
All bit of a pain but keep the records of these contacts safe, so eventually when some supplier does wake up to the fact they have not been chargeing for gas, you can demand that the " No more then12 month back billing agreement"
is applied to your account0 -
Also worth saying you should put a reasonable amount aside every month, so when this mess does get sorted you will be in a position to clear your debt without stressing over it.0

Its not uncommon for gas meters to be stolen from one address in the area and used as a substitute meter for the original one. Usually they are stolen from vacant or boarded up properties0

Very much agree with the actions recommended in Post#2.
The 12 month backdating rule for new occupants only applies if the occupant has taken steps(they can prove) to attempt to get an account; so it is essential that you write - preferably recorded delivery - to BGas and Xsoserve.0 -
Is it London area by any chance? Im aware of property conversions that are been done by cowboys including gas installs.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Transporters are exempt from this rule, (xoserve) is also only the data information . National grid / sgn / ngn are the transporters, they also can bill under the theft act if you don't have a supplier including billing you for the unregistered service.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it.
