Selling to Pawnbrokers....

Hi guys

I'm after some advice or ideas...

I have a diamond engagement ring that I want to sell. I can't/don't want to sell it on eBay as I have no box or cert for it, and it has a slight inclusion, so it's better if its seen first.

Has anyone had any experience with selling to a pawnbrokers or one of those Cash Converter shops? I'm not bothered how much I get for it, it cost £1k originally (def from my pre LBM days!!! - not that I bought it).

If not a pawnbroker, anyone got any ideas what I could do with it to get a bit of cash?.... Shame coz its a lovely ring, but its from a prev relationship, so I don't wear it any more!

my advice is don't go NEAR any of those kind of places. They're in it to make a profit and you won't get anywhere near what it's worth. I used to work for ernest jones jewellers and my advice is to get it valued... for example ernest jones send them to safeguard to be valued.. think it was about £20 but you'd get a full detailed valuation plus all the details of the diamond such as colour and clarity grading as well as carat weight with a picture of the ring in the form of a certificate.
Then you can sell it privately or on ebay with the certificate to prove the quality.

    Hi Sarah

I sold my old engagement ring (like you from a previous relationship) to a second hand jewellers. I didn't get a huge amount for it (only cost about £150 new) It might be worth looking to see what jewellers you have in the area.

If not have you got any box that you could put it in? I know some shops will sell you presentation boxes, that way it might be worth giving Ebay a try.

    Good Luck though

Selling jewelery is a nightmare. You will only get a fraction of its true worth.
If I were you, I'd get, as previously suggested, a valuation from a local jeweller - tell them it's for insurance purposes. After you've got the valuation, ask the jeweller what you could reasonably expect if you sold it - you'd be amazed at the difference.
Try and sell it privately, or on ebay (with a reserve).

and then if you're covered for loss on your house insurance accidentally lose it and claim for the value...

Hi - what did you decide to do?
I also have an engagement ring worth £1.2k to sell - never thought of selling it on ebay - was just going to go to a jewellers that buy jewellery. Would be really interested in what you decided to do and what the outcome was! Cheers.

I wouldn't go near a pawnbroker - they will only give you a fraction of what the ring is worth. As others have said, if you pay to get a proper valuation done with a full description, ask around family & friends to see if you can get a presentation box etc then you'll be able to sell it much easier.

Of course, a valuation from a jeweller is going to be the price you'd have to pay to replace it new, so you won't actually get that selling it on Ebay unfortunately.

Definitely get an evaluation from a reputable jewelers - if I was to buy anything THAT expensive on Ebay I'd want some sort of certificate to tell me it's genuine and I'd still pay for someone to tell me the ring was the one on the certficate... See what you can get locally and then compare with what similar things have sold for on Ebay - might even be worth hanging on to it till Christmas or Valentines ;) It's amazing how many people propose at those times ;)

I'm gonna take the advice I've been given here and take it to a jewellers to get it valued/get a cert etc. Once that's done, I'll probs list it on eBay.

Haven't had time to do it yet, but may pop into Oxford this week to get it looked at - I'll let u know how I get on

Edit - or not.... forgot about the flooding! It may have to wait a while....
