Anglian Credit Card Surcharge

I would be grateful if forum members can help with advice on credit card surcharge.

I signed a contract with Anglian to replace the doors and windows of my house for the amount of £5350. I paid a 10% deposit(£535)to the sales person there and then. He asked how I was paying. Obviously I don't keep such amounts of cash in the house so I replied if I could pay with a card. He said yes and I asked debit or credit card and he replied it doesn't matter. So I just picked up the first card in my wallet and handed it to him. He did not tell me that there would be credit card surcharge.
Today the installers turned up and started work. Later they gave me a letter saying "this is just some information for you". When later I had time to open it, it transpired that on top of the outstanding amount of £4815 they had charged me additional £96.30 Credit Card Surcharge.

This is horrendous. Please advise if I can refuse to pay the surcharge and what are my rights in this case?

    That's 2%.

Just because you paid the deposit by credit card, surely you don't have to pay the balance that way.

If funds permit, pay the balance by debit card and you will still have full protection by the credit card company on the whole purchase price.
