Engagement ring

My sisters engagement ring has broken after only 6 months of wearing it. The stones have come out of the setting.

She's worn it every day, normal wear and tear, she doesn't tend to rip up concrete with her bare hands or anything like that. As you would imagine, she's heartbroken.

The ring was bought from a store though I'm not sure yet which one. I thought SOGA would apply as it hasn't been fit for purpose? What do you think?

Thanks

Depends on the price of the ring, the metal, the clasps of the setting and the quality and cut of the stones.

Some rings are not meant to be worn every day, and if you quote "normal wear and tear" to the retailer then you are onto a loser straight away.
  • Thanks. Aren't they (engagement rings) by definition meant to be worn all the time? I'm a proud and persistent spinster, my knowledge of such things is, happily, limited.

Is the intended use of the ring something the jeweller would/should have discussed with my sister and that bloke she's going to marry at the time of purchase?

Some soft metal rings are not meant to be worn all the time. Even some wedding bands, do not drop a tungsten carbide band on a tiled floor for example because although its practically scratch proof it will shatter...

The jeweller may have discussed it but (s)he is under no legal onus to do so.
  • Well done earnest jones shop. My sister took the ring back this morning, they exchanged, no quibble, no fuss.

Well done, I'm glad your sister got the result she wanted.

I was afraid for a while that she had got her ring at Argos for £19.99 :p. Glad that I was wrong and it all worked out ok.
    :p
