WTC Overpayment

My partner got a letter in the post today from HMRC stating;

___
Payment Plan £282.77

Our records show that you are behind with your payment plan etc...

Period Ended:
05-04-2010 WTC Overpayment 195.22
06-04-2010 WTC Overpayment 87.55

Total Unpaid Amount £282.77
___

The letter came completely out of the blue, she's received absolutely nothing from HMRC in the last 4 years and had always had address details up to date everywhere.

She remembers having WTC for a very short period of time around then, but doesn't remember even getting that amount in total.

Apparently she got a letter regarding an overpayment around that time of about £60 which was paid immediately. However this amount has never been seen before, and certainly had no payment plan set up.

The two periods are consecutive days, which make little sense so I have no idea what or how long the 'period' it refers to is.

Also, why would this have 'suddenly' come to light 4 years on?

What is the general procedure for dealing with things like this with HMRC, is there anything we can request from them to try and breakdown amounts and dates.

Finally, are there any websites (or even on here) with decent information/templates/advice for dealing with HMRC on this.

Thanks in advance.

    Could she possibly have failed to return the renewal notice. This is not only for claiming for the new tax year but also finalises the claim for the previous tax year. If it is not returned then all the tax credits for that period are repayable

    Hi.

    From what I understand she may have claimed 'joint' WTC with her partner at the time. (No idea if that is valid or not)

    She split up with him and moved out around the end of March/Early April 2010.

    She was never the one who wanted to claim them but was somewhat 'forced' into it by him, so never really understood what was going on with it all. So as you say there is no way she would have filled in any form of renewal.

    As far as she remembers she got a letter around mid 2010 stating that she had been overpaid by around £60 (she thinks) and immediately paid this back.

    This letter is odd as it has come out of the blue 4 years later (absolutely nothing from HMRC in the interim) and referring to a 'payment plan' which she has no recollection of ever setting up.

    If WTC was 'joint' back then is it possible this could also relate to him, if he didn't update details with HMRC. I'm not sure but this could have all been paid into his account.
  • Thanks.

    I'll get a letter sent requesting the awards notice and copies of all correspondence they have sent (or at least think they may have) since that date.

    Should be fun :mad::rotfl:
