How long is reasonable to manage without a fridge freezer?

My Blomberg fridge freezer failed completely last Saturday after under 2 years. It was still under guarantee. The fridge engineers used by Blomberg sent someone out who identified that an electrical unit had failed and has ordered a new one. I had expected the repair to be done by the end of this week but heard today of an unexplained delay in the supply of the main electrical replacement part. If this has not been resolved by Friday, I intend to contact Blomberg Customer Services themselves.

How long is reasonable to expect someone to manage without a fridge? If it had been a dishwasher or oven, it would be much easier. I am wondering whether to insist on a replacement. I have already wasted leave from work just staying in to wait for the engineers (as usual no weekend service).

Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Blomberg fridge freezer? My washing machine is the same brand and same age but has been ok so far. Perhaps I have just been unlucky.

I would be ringing them every day.

And don't forget to talk to them about the cost of spoiled food. Their guarantee probably excludes that but, bearing in mind the 'unexplained delay', they might be more prepared to be helpful.

You will have cover in your house insurance for spoiled food. I don't know how long they expect you to last without a fridge but in the short term you will just need to change your buying habits.

I am not claiming on the house insurance as my initial loss probably didn't exceed the excess and i have no proof of the value of it. I couldn't keep it to prove and it had started to smell badly. However I am considering a complaint to Blomberg. If I hear nothing by tomorrow, I will have to buy a 2nd hand fridge from somewhere like the British Heart foundation shop. I have a new lodger who only moved in the day before the fault occurred.

I haven't bought any new fridge food since it happened (except milk which went off in under 48 hours)

My grandparents lasted their entire lives, and their parents too!

Not sure it was reasonable though.

I expect that your grandma was a housewife who had time to shop daily while her husband was earning their living at work

True, but they would have probably had a cold larder, with a food safe to keep food cool but the flies off. And, as pointed out, shopped more often.

These days, most of us are no longer geared up for living without the wonders of refrigeration.

Have you a cool box, and can ask the neighbour to freeze the ice packs for you in the mean time?

When our fridge freezer failed a couple of months ago I bought an old fridge off eBay the same day for £20 to last until we chose a replacement fridge freezer. I then put the old fridge back on eBay and sold it on for £30 :)
