Hole Saw or Normal drill bit ?

Hello

I need to drill a hole , for drainage , in a aluminium leg of a canopy , the instructions specify a 51mm hole , which I know needs doing by a hole saw , which I don’t have , nor do I have the adapter to fit it in my drill , so its going to cost me £15+ to drill one hole….

Can I not use my bosch drill bit which is designed for all surfaces and just make the hole bigger using force ?

Also , using either a hole saw or a normal drill bit , how do I make sure the edges of the cut hole don’t rust ?

Any ideas welcome

    Dan - aluminium doesn't rust!

Why does it need to be precisely 51mm. If it needs to be that exact trying to bodge it with a smaller drill bit and milling it out is going to be almost impossible to do accurately.

That said a hole saw on aluminium would need a pilot drill attached to keep it in position - trying to just cut the circle would lead to it skidding all over the surface.

cheers Dave , not sure why 51mm but thats a `standard` holesaw size , apparently

the pilot drill is the attachement i was on about (isnt it?)

Seems quite a big hole just to let water out unless there is a danger that dirt etc might get down the leg and this needs to get out as well. If its just water then a small hole might suffice.

thats what i thought , though i do need to fill below the hole with a cement mix to the level of the hole to ensure the water flows out once it hits the concrete , so i am assuming thats why it needs to be that big...
