Occasional Car Insurance for Non-UK Resident

Options
Hello

Would much appreciate advise on good insurers who

1) will arrange short term insurance (eg for a week) for a non-uk resident with uk licence to drive my car (as my current insurers will not allow) The potential driver is over fifty and a family member.

2) will allow a non-uk resident to be added to existing policy - (if only on a temporary basis) so when my renewal comes I will look to them. I have heard so far that Aviva and Saga allow this..

Mnay thanks

  • I asked a similar question a few weeks ago. The conclusion I came to was that adding the person (even temporarily) to my insurance was not a good move. John Lewis Insurance do have underwriters that can do this but the underwriter who could, wanted to charge me 25% more than an underwriter who could not and that was just to maintain my existing insurance. There was then an extra charge (unspecified) every time I wanted to add my daughter temporarily onto the policy. (She is the one living abroad temporarily, has a full UK licence and is no longer a youngster.)
I also tried an Aviva quote and again, the basic policy was more expensive even before adding my daughter temporarily.
I did add her on a few occasions in the past when she did live in the UK and it was typically £15 for day one and maybe £7.50 for subsequent days but that was a while ago.
There are a couple of brokers who advertise that they can insure Australians (who seem to be the worst case:D) visiting this country but I expect their policy to be expensive compared to a standard UK resident policy.
You can get standalone insurance just for the visitor to drive your car for the days they are visiting. This is independant of your insurance. For my daughter the costs were roughly £30 for 1 day, £60 for 3 days.
The third and probably cheapest option is to hire a small car. Its seems a nonsense but this seems to be cheaper or as cheap as the independant insurance and comes fully insured. I have yet to try this option so the devil may be in the detail.
I'm sorry this is not really an answer to your question but I hope it helps. If you find a really good answer, I would be pleased to hear about it.:)
