DPFs are the modern day catalytic convertor. Instead of developing more efficient, clean burning diesels and demanding the use of cleaner diesel fuel, industry persuaded government to allow industry to make even bigger profits by bolting on expensive, largely useless, extra components. Use the example of a London Taxi. It rarely gets used at speeds that will speed up the movement of soot in the exhaust system, so the DPF blocks more frequently, has forced regenerations, uses more fuel to do so and what comes out the exhaust? Particulates that are smaller, cause more irritation to the respiration system and the taxis are more expensive to buy too!

Running a dpf equipped diesel on tickover won't generate enough heat to regenerate the dpf.

Buses and LGVs have indeed had dpfs fitted for many years.

I would suspect they also run Adblue aswell.

The way they get round the dpf issues are by having the dpfs cleaned as part of normal maintenance. This is why dpfs on commercial vehicles are easier to access.

One company that specialises in cleaning dpfs is Ceramex.

I have done some research into dpfs and it does seem the big issue is ash.

Ash builds up in the dpf and the ecu is unable to differentiate between ash and soot as the sensors read the same regardless of which is causing the blockage.

Ash can't be removed by a regen like soot.

Washing the dpf with a power washer will also not work for long.

It needs to be done correctly.or the dpf needs renewed.

A dpf clean is around £250 plus cost to remove and refit.

Obviously egr valve, injector issues or any other running problem will lead to excessive clogging of the filter so sometimes dpf lights coming on is a symptom of a different issue.

Too many failed regens will result in diesel in the sump and possible engine failure.

100k or so is the mileage when a dpf may need to be cleaned from my research.

A lot of taxi owners where I live are changing to petrol when they renew their cars. DPF problems are relatively recent, older tasxis won't have them fitted. One guy I know has had his DPF removed, but I'm not sure that is legal.

You see quite a lot of Hybrids (especially on the continent). Makes perfect sens for all the wai, move 1 car space forward, wait some more etc.
