Hi,

I need some advice please. I would like to know how to get proof of no claims bonus to show my new car insurance providers? However, I haven't owned a vehicle for around 8 years but I've been a named driver on my partner's car insurance for around that time. I've told the new car insurance that I have several years NCD and they need proof of this as evidence. How do I go about this? Will the previous insurers still have my details at their office after 8 years or so?

Thanks

I'm fairly sure NCD isnt valid after 3 years lack of insurance. Have you actually started the new policy? You may be in for an unpleasant surprise when they cancel it.

You need to go back to the new insurer and explain that you in actual fact have 0 years NCD and hope that they will give you some sort of introductory discount. I guess this depends whether the new policy has started yet, if it has they have you over a barrel.

If you have 14 days to cancel this then if I were in your shoes I would do.

You have NO NCD at the moment and if you persist with this policy they could cancel it. Get out now if you can without alerting them to to you lack of NCD.

I'd echo the above, cancel the policy and take a small hit (should be less than £50) rather than try to explain it to the insurer.

Sounds like you have 0 ncb - it's often not incurred through being a named driver. If quotes are coming in notoriously high then try a broker and see if they can help by you proving you've been a named driver for years.

Even when named driver NCD has been earned its only valid with the insurer its earned with, other insurers won't accept it.

Call the insurer and explain the situation. Loads of people step out of company cars or other arrangements that haven't earned them NCD and get credit for prior history by getting confirmation in writing from third parties. However, if you do nothing, your insurance will be invalid.

Unfortunately you have 0 no claims bonus - no claims bonus dies after it isn't used for two years.

I'd advise your current insurers that you made a mistake and actually have 0 NCB rather than what you said. They won't cancel the insurance, they will merely re-net the policy cost to what it wouldve been if you'd originally stated 0 NCB. Likely to be quite a big jump in price, but you aren't in trouble for it.

Online application through the meerkats asks when you have zero NCD if you have any as a named driver. This then is taken into account in the quoted prices.

Yes but when you then send one companies named driver proof to another company they usually reject it and recalculate the premium.

There are so many transfer mistakes on comparison sites that I would never buy though them but go direct to the insurers websites.

Years ago I left a job where I had a company car. The company or insurer (?) gave me a letter stating I had so many 'claim free years' ... Churchill accepted this ... not sure if they still do.
