    Yes, its basically built into windows 8.

    I will say microsodt secuirty essentials was dropping down the lists of effectiveness last time I checked, I am not saying its useless but it may be better to go for avast (free edition).

    there is a fundamental mistake in that article - cryptolocker DOESN'T lock your machine, it encrypts all your user files (pics, docs, music, etc) and you need the encryption key to undo the encryption. One of the keys is on your machine, the other half is (in theory - in early deployments of CL the perps have delivered it after payment, but not always) given to you after you make payment.

    Removing the encryption program is the easy bit, but if you do, you'll never be able to decrypt your data as it will also remove the info needed for obtaining the key you need to decrypt. Good info here:-
