Leather recliner chair

I purchased 2 leather recliner chairs in July 2011 from a local retailer. The leather on the seat and recliner leg area of one chair is really beginning to crack and split and it looks horrible. This chair is used daily so I'd expect to see some signs of wear and tear, but the leather is actually flaking off. Am I being unrealistic in expecting it to last longer than 3 years or is that quite normal?
I have a leather sofa from the same retailer that is a few years older and that is absolutely fine (the leather does feel quite a bit thicker on this).
Just curious to peoples thoughts......

It depends what quality of leather you purchased, indicated by how much the chair cost.
If I had spent £200 on a leather recliner and it started failing after three years of daily use I wouldn't be too upset. If I had spent £1,000 I would be far from happy.0 -
my advice is, do not own loads of cats like me, otherwise a year or two becomes a minute or two!0

I had the same problem with a leather recliner that I had bought. I measured the thickness of the leather and found that it was less than 0.2mm. It looked as if it had been sprayed on. It's a mystery to me how they manage to get it so thin.
Perhaps it was just ground up particles of leather that they did actually spray on. We will never know as the chair is now broken up and at the tip.
Of course, the new kitten had not helped.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
The chairs cost just under £400 each - so not overly expensive but not throwaway money either.
I also have a catShe's caught/scratched the sides a few times, but I'm not worried about those.
Anyone tried to make new covers for a recliner before? :rotfl:0 -
Leather needs feeding and specialist cleaning to keep it supple.
We use products by Gliptone, who supply Rolls Royce.
Originally they just served the car market, but now have a large range of items for all kinds of leathers, including colour restorer.
Some of their items are sold, under their own name, by furniture manufacturers, but direct or via a specialist website, prices are much lower and the range is wider. A 1 litre bottle is over £20 but lasts for years.
