I have been reading the above and think I may have got the wrong end of the stick so would just like to clarify. I thought I could put stuff from my phone or tablet on the smart tv and then use it on there like say a Google internet browse or a YouTube search list, controlling it from the phone as I continue to browse but now I am now wondering is it just that you can send a page from the phone to the tv and look at it on there but that you cant actually do anything with it on there and would need to send each page seperately to the TV and then only to view it bigger, so can anybody tell me which it is please?

I was hoping to do things on my phone and send them to the TV to then only use my phone to control it whilst watching what I am doing on the TV rather than the phone I suppose a bit like having a big screen PC whilst controlling it from a wireless keyboard on my lap but I am thinking now that its quite up to that stage.

    Appreciate any info on this.

Depends on the TV and phone/tablet!

I can start Youtube on my Nexus7 then press a button to send it to my LG Smart TV (the TV then starts it's own youtube app and plays the video).

Their is also something called "Miracast" or "Intel WiDi" that lets certain tablets and phones mirror their output onto a compatible TV.

Most TV's will have a Remote Control app for tablets and phones to give basic functions like change channel and volume.

Might be an idea to say what phone and tablet you have, so that people can give you a better idea.

For example, if you have an iPad, iPhone or Mac, you could get Apple TV to mirror what is on the screen of your device, and control what is on the screen of your tv, on your device. There are also various apps on Apple TV that you can watch independently from your phone/tablet.

Chromecast still sounds like the ideal solution for happyhero...
  • I connected a wireless mouse and keyboard up my old laptop with a broken screen and connected that up to my TV much smarter than my other 'smart' TV. You could probably do something similar with a raspberry pi.
Nothing to see here, move along.
