i'm about to rent a property and will need to be reference checked.

what is this and what information are they looking for??

i'm worried about this as i've never rented anywhere before.

i think it depends on each estate agent, but what happened with me was that they went through my credit history, got a character reference, information from my boss about my salary and a referene from a former landlord.

some landlords will ask for less - some just take a reference from a landlord i think. are you able to ask them what they need?

It depends. Might just be a credit check, might be a CC plus an employer's confirmation of income (or accountant's confirmation if you're self-employed), might be this other checks.
