Talk to your neighbour, see if they intend on doing anything else before going to the expense of putting a fence up.
But there is already a fence there! :)It's just the trees getting removed on the neighhbour's side the OP is complaining about.0 -

But possibly the neighbour has grand plans to change the fence once he/she has removed the trees and replace with a taller fence. For the sake of a quick chat the OP could find out what is planned and even if the neighbour has no further plans at least they can then let them know that they will be erecting a larger fence for privacy."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
When I moved into my house I removed some confers that were on my side of the boundary with a falling down fence on the boundary. The lady next door was so happy about this as the sun now shines into her lounge she knocked on the door and offered to pay for a fence to be erected. We ended up paying half each. Our boundary is shared.0

Now, they have chopped them down meaning there is absolutely no privacy whatsoever, needless to say I am a little annoyed that this wasn't mention to us just as a matter of courtesy.
I would now like to erect a larger fence to give us our privacy back but am unsure as to the best way to approach this. We don't really speak but I don't want to cause any friction.
If we wanted to do this would they be liable to half the cost?
Try speaking to them!.0
