Thailand Holiday Deposit

Hi would really appreciate some advice - paid a £300 deposit for a holiday in september 2 nights in bangkok and 10 in phuket. So Thailand has a military coupe and next week i have to pay the remainder of my holiday cost. The travel agent has said that i can either pay an additional £200 to change the holiday and flights or loose £300 deposit. current play is if i was traveling tomorrow i would get a full refund. any thoughts or ideas ? mark

Surely there's another option - pay for the holiday and go on it.

    I'd still go.

The curfew has been relaxed so it's now only from midnight to 4am (although some bars are doing all-night lock-ins to get around it). As long as you avoid public demonstrations and sensitive areas then you shouldn't have any problems, especially once you get out of Bangkok.

I don't think its as bad as the media make out. This was posted on travel weekly:

Sitting by the pool at our Hua Hin hotel and still wondering why the British press and media insist on babbling on about the " situation" here in Thailand. We spotted a small group of soldiers eating lunch near the airport when we arrived last week and none since them. Fewer police than in the small rural market town in England where we live!
A large dose of reality is needed when discussing the coup. It's about as newsworthy as what Nigel Farage ate for breakfast, and everyone knows there is absolutely nothing interesting about him.

:beer:My Dad is currently on holiday in Thailand. He says its business as usual only the golf course is a bit emptier as the US Navy is on alert. I would go in a heartbeat if I had the cash and a valid passport

You would only be entitled to a refund if the FCO issues a directive advising against "all travel" or "all but essential travel". Until then, the travel companies are not obliged to cancel or change your itinerary.

But as others have said, these things tend to get blown out of all proportion. You won't have any trouble in the tourist areas and if you avoid any demonstrations, you probably won't notice anything in Bangkok either.

Yup. Cancelled in Phuket, Pattaya and Samui.
