    Barclays offer both an online and offline Contactless Debit Card.

    When you opened your account, you'd have received either an online or offline card depending on credit scoring.

    If you was initially given an 'online' card, you'll have to go into branch and apply for an 'offline' card. They'll run a credit check on you.

    Barclays do 2 types of card

    The online one is called a Connect Electronic, and the offline card is simply called a Connect Card.

    If your card number starts 4658 its the Connect Electronic card, if it starts 4659 is the offline Connect Card.
    Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:

    My bank card starts with 4658 59 and I pay on trains absolutely fine, its offline I was told by barclays, I used to have an online card a few months ago but they upgraded my card to contactless as my status had improved. The 4658/4659 argument is rubbish. The card I have now is blisteringly fast, it comes up with "Please remove your card" within 1/2 a second. Where as it used to take 5-10 seconds. I've had 5-6 online cards and they were always the same speed.
    -== CREDIT BUILD IN PROCESS 30% COMPLETE ==- :)
    Overdraft - £0 Used/£500 Limit
    Vanquis Card - £1000 Limit
    Aqua Card - £1200 Limit
    Barclaycard Platinum - £2500 Limit

    Credit Utilisation 11%/Savings - £1800

    It's possible the train had a connection. I've seen more and more train companies using card readers that connect to the bank these days. Even some planes are now able to take 'online' card payments. :)

    An online debit card must be able to contact the bank during a transaction to check you have the money in your account. If it can't because their is no phone line or internet connection then it it will decline. An offline card can work when their is no live connection.

    I just opened a full current account with Barclay's, got a debit card starting with 4658 58...

    I have a full current account with HSBC which has a contact-less debit card not that I ever used the feature and I have a reward account with Halifax and to be honest I don't think that has contact-less on it.

    I'm in the process of closing the HSBC one.
