I second Police involvement. It happened to a friend of mine who was suffering from email and Facebook harassment aimed at his business. The Police were excellent and took it very seriously.

It's not harassment as such but the sender of the email has contacted the employer of a family member several times with untrue allegations

Erm ... I would say that IS harassment! It is also libel.

Yes, that is harrassment and probably a few other civil offenses if the allegations are untrue. The employer should also take action, as one of it's employees is being harassed.

Please also note, you need the original electronic version of the mail too - a forward will destroy them
Forwarding the email as an attachment rather than inline will preserve the headers.

Chances are they will be of no assistance unless the sender has taken no precautions.

The employer does not want to get his company involved in any hassle and has deleted the emails - he says because they contained foul language - so there's no way of getting the headings.

If there are any more though, and the employer still doesn't want to co operate, I will advise the family member to speak to the police.

Has the employer taken any notice of such allegations or are they disregarding them.. Is there a clear 'culprit' that may be behind this..

The employer has a duty of care toward the employee. They should be informed that the Police are to become involved and that they should keep any further email for them to use.
Sounds like they would be better off finding another employer to be honest.

So has decided to bury his head instead, does he not realise if this person is on a bit of a vendetta they could start spreading the rumours to try and discredit his company... very irresponsible of the employer in my opinion.
