Painting wooden staircase

Hi I'm planning on painting my staircase with white matt paint it has already been painted in a white gloss paint.

What would be the best way to prep the stairs? (sand paper/ undercoat?)

Wash thoroughly with sugar soap, prime bare patches, undercoat, 2 topcoats.

White matt paint on a staircase will show dirt very quickly, especially on the handrail (within days).

Oil based eggshell would be more hardwearing with a semi shine or even a satin finish.

Thanks for the advice would you advise giving the stairs an undercoat even though it's already been painted?

I would as it's already gloss, undercoat will help adhesion.
