Working out cake size needed

Apologies if this is the wrong place- I figured there were probably a few bakers on here that may be able to advise me :)

One of my friends is getting married soon and asked if I'd make her wedding cake. It has to feed 24 people and will be served as dessert, so the portions should be fairly generous. I've looked at loads of serving charts, but the dessert portions listed still seem a bit small to me.

I'd rather have too much cake than not enough, so I was thinking a 12 inch round cake to be safe (I'd rather not do a tiered cake as I feel this would be way too much cake, and as I'm a bridesmaid as well I don't want to be faffing about with the dowling on the day).

Is this about right or am I way off the mark?

Thanks in advance!
