Made redundant

Options
Hi
Apologies for the length of this post!

Recently been told my job role is redundant.
Currently in the consultation period, which ends July 1st, then my 12 weeks notice starts. I have had my one to one meeting.
I have been employed 20 years and had a good career, I am devastated to lose my job.
On Friday I went to the doctors as I'm not eating or sleeping and my work and personal life is suffering.
He wanted to sign me off work due to work related stress.
Can anyone give me any advice on whether my redundancy pay could be affected?
My contract states I'm entitled to 6 months company sick pay.
I assume my terms and conditions are the same until my last day?
During my one to one I asked for PILON or gardening leave and I was told I had to work until my leaving date.
Would there be negatives to going off sick, as I really am not coping well?

Thankyou for taking the time to read my long post.

You might want to post your question on www.redundancyforum.co.uk, there's some knowledgeable people on there.
I found a similar thread already posted, but it's a few years old so you'll need to check in case the legislation has changed.

Just wanted to say as well that I can empathise with your predicament. I'm in line to be made redundant at the end of July after 25 years (my last day of service is my 50th birthday, how's that for timing?)
The last CV I filled in was when I left school so I'm not exactly brimming with confidence in applying/getting a new role.
On the other hand, whilst not wanting to sound trite, some of what kept me in my job was the accumulated benefits and years of service, so now they're gone it's as good a time as any to try something new and maybe a bit different. And if something new doesn't work, then there's nothing to keep me and I can move on again. That's how I'm trying to spin it to myself at the moment, anyway, trying to keep positive.
Does your employer have any sort of employee assistance programme you can go to to talk things through as well?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Hi
    Thanks for your quick reply.

Sorry to hear of your redundancy too, not a great date for your last day either.
I've never done a CV, and only had one "formal" interview.
I'm sure there's plenty of sites with CV templates to help.

I know I need to keep positive, but I am finding it difficult.
My friends tell me I have a lot of skills and maybe I should be looking at trying something different that use my managerial skills.
I will have a look at the website you suggested.

Good luck with your job hunting.

    Hi OP,

Elsien is right, try to look at it as positively as you can, you will no longer be 'tied' so if your next role doesn't work out, you can move on again without worrying.

Although my length of service was nowhere near yours (9 years!), I was made redundant at Christmas from the only full time employer I'd known since leaving uni. It is scary and daunting, but remember, it's your role that's no longer required, not you. You will have built up loads of skills in that time that I bet you don't even know you have!

I think as part of redundancy, firms have to offer employees reasonable time off to look for new jobs and/or attend interviews. My ex-employer also offered a CV and skills building workshop to help people who hadn't had to look externally in a while. Can you ask and see if there's something similar?

As far as I'm aware your T&Cs and redundancy won't be affected if you are off sick, although I'd say keep your boss regularly updated. I can't see any negatives to it, as they know your last day, your redundnacy will already be calculated. Plus, I know it sounds a bit harsh but you don't owe them anything now, if you're not coping then take the time off while you can and busy yourself looking for another employer who I'm sure would be grateful to have you.

    Good luck OP :)

    Dawn,
Good luck with your job hunt. Im in the same position, try and remain positive and channel the energy that you put into your last job into your new job search.
Regarding your terms and conditions, if your sick your sick and if your Doctor signs you off then your employer cant question that, however do keep your employer updated.
I focussed on getting my finances sorted, it meant giving up luxuries, however it means im able to manage the important bills (mortgage) for a while before my redundancy money runs out.
    Good luck.
  • Thanks Roobee & Lexington for your replies.

I have contacted HR and they obviously don't want me to go off sick. They have suggested meeting me and my manager.
I know this will stress me more.
Everyday I am feeling more upset and worrying about bills and if I can find future employment.
At work I'm struggling to concentrate, as I'm tired and I'm snapping at my team.
I earn a very good wage at the moment, and this is what my mortgage and other outgoings are based on.
I have already stopped spending and trying to save as much as I can.

Thanks again, it's nice to hear from others that have or are going through the same thing.
