Advice needed - Skim or Dot n Dab

Hi All
After a bit of advice regards plastering.
Have stripped the old wallpaper from the upstairs landing, stairs and hallway. Am going to knock off any loose plaster that I can find and then was going to get someone in to fill and then skim the entire area. Doesn't look too bad but the old plaster is hairline cracked all over and there are three or four loose areas that I can see.
Speaking to a friend, he suggested knocking all the old plaster off and then Dot 'n Dab the entire thing and then skim. He has stated that any skim work will crack within 6 months anyway.
Obviously don't want to simply skim for it to crack but also thinking of the effort involved in removing the old plaster (the mess in getting it off and then disposing of it) and the added cost of Dot n Dab.
So, are there any plasterers on here or anyone with experience that could comment ?

“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”
