Well unless you're a dab hand with a router, power tools et al, I suggest that you just stick to a plain piece of 1 1/4 x 3/4 and just glue and/or pin it to the front edge of the shelves, so the top edge is flush with the top part of the shelf.

Mine are oak veneered shelves with a solid oak lipping, the edge stands about 6mm higher than the shelf. Makes it easier to produce a better job that way, Oak plugs then fill the counter bored holes into the front edge.
They also look well if the batten is set back a few mm under the shelf itself and screwed down from above, again not having to make a perfect 90deg angle makes it easier to produce a good job.

The raised lipping method serves another use, it prevents such as photographs etc sliding off the edge.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Just to update......I went for the twin slot railing and brackets with pine boards which I have painted white. Bought it all from Wickes as they do a cutting service so less work for the decorator.
Decorator is finishing off the room painting tomorrow and then the rails and shelves will be slotted into place.
    thanks for all the advice!

So glad I came across this thread as I'll be wanting to do something very similar in the near future and this is a great way to do it. I love the idea of adjustable height shelves. :D
