Anyhow - need to know the situation re not being able to tax it today or tomorrow - Sunday due to post office being closed.
I know that you can re-tax online, presuming they send the disc? but can't do that as not enough funds in the bank, have the money here so can't even put it in the bank to pay online till Monday
Any advice? I know it's only going to be a day but I'm scared i'll be stopped by the police as I have to drive the car tomorrow
For future reference, some Post Offices are open on a Sunday.

Correct - so long as you buy the disc online before the end of the month you have 14 days grace before you need to display it.
That's very good to know about buying it before the current disc expires - I didn't know that - I've only taxed online once before.
What if the vehicle had been on SORN?
I taxed my camper van on-line on the 30th having had it laid up over the winter - presumably? I am OK to use it before the disc arrives.
I'll be happier when the monthly DD system starts in October.
Hopefully then I'll be able to start and stop as I wish.
But knowing the DVLA - they won't make it that simple.0 -

It's 14 days if the new licence is taken out before the expiry of the old one, or a SORN declaration ceases to be in force.
A SORN will cease to be in force as soon as you apply for a licence.0 -
Iceweasel, the secret to my authoritative knowledge on this matter derives entirely from my having read what is written on the renewal notice...Optimists see a glass half full

Pessimists see a glass half empty
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be

Yes - thanks for that - but I have no idea where the renewal notice I received back in November when I SORNed the camper is now.
But you're right - if all else fails - read the instructions.

In the days before computer, people had a 2 week grace period when the accepted practice was to stick a note on the windscreen stating 'tax disc in post.'
I suspect that is no longer appropriate, as mentioned above electronic checks are done based on your registration plate number.
That's not quite true. There has never been a legal 'grace period' for VED.
Whilst the 'tax in post' myth continues to be propagated, it is just that; a myth, borne out of the fact that it used to be only possible that you would actually be stopped by a policeman, and to have something in the window where the tax disc should be would, at a quick glance as you drove past, mean that it not being tax would often go unnoticed.
There still is no 'grace period' for taxation, however the 'failure to display' offence is effectively suspended for 14 days after the renewal date but ONLY if you apply and pay for the new VED period BEFORE the expiration of your old disc. If there is any break in taxation, that suspension no longer applies and 'failure to display' can still be committed.0 -

Quite correct. The link below is a definitive statement by the police on the matter.
