A really rather disgusting question

If you line dry them in the sun as well the exposure to ultraviolet light can also kill anything left on the item, so if you take a holistic approach and use a low temp detergent and dry in the sun on a line I think that you will be safe enough. The detergent will get most off the fabric and the sunlight will certainly kill anything left. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0

Disgusting question? Hardly. But here is the disgusting answer. Wash the undies at 30 degrees and then once dry, smell the crotch of the undies. I bet you will find it still smells dirty.
Embarrassing explanation as to how I know this: I once, as a joke, told my other half I loved them so much, I would recognise them by the smell of their underpants. To illustrate this, I took clean undies from the wardrobe and smelt them.....and thought: erhm....that does not smell very clean at all..... Since then, all undies go on at least 40 but mostly I chuck it in with towels at 75 degrees. That has worked.0 -

Now that really is disgusting, :rotfl::rotfl:

I wonder if using any extra boiled water from the kettle in a bucket with undies, would be more frugal than heating up the entire washing machine to 60? Not that I worry, everything gets 30 or 40 here except I've started doing sheets at 60 to hopefully kill dustmites.Debts 2004: £6000..............................................Aug 2007: £0!!!!0

Does using the 'quick wash setting' decrease the effective of say, a 40 degree wash compared to the normal longer wash cycle setting?
The quick wash requires you to use less product.Dave Ramsey Fan[/COLOR]0 -

Yep
Apparently 30oC is the temp those microbiologists use to grow those bugs
But then I did read that the the mail a year or so back so could be wrong
However ( I'm hitting 50) I remember my mum and my gran hot washing undies, face cloths, sheets, towels and tea towels
That's long before the likes of vanish etc
And I have to say it works. A hot wash and a line dry is required.
Funny how now they sell additives for the wash to kill germs. A hot wash will sort that need
Only have to see how many people post to the stinky washing machine thread, smelly towel thread to know this0 -

I wonder if it is an "age thing"? I am fifty-four and wash all towels, bedding and pants at ninety-five with proper bleachy powder.0 -
